Intel gambled and lost when they figured they could strongarm the computer industry to move to their proprietary itanium.

It might have worked if there had been any software for it, but the hazard of having only one software company in the world is that it can't always deliver when people need it.

Intel spent just too much time and too much money on boosting their technologywise inferior "Centrino" platform to gain a leading market share against BRCM and ATHR in WLAN.
The INTC disease is contagious and has so far hurt Dell the most.

While doing that they forgot to defend their market position in the core business based on complacency vs. their "inferior" competitor AMD.

Cramer who hated AMD as recently as two years ago had this to say about the company today:

"The leaders in the Internet space are using semiconductor chips made by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD:NYSE - news - research - Cramer's Take), and he believes that it's because AMD's chips are cheaper and faster than chips made by Intel (INTC:Nasdaq - news - research - Cramer's Take)."
