Well, there really was an international guild of masons in the medieval era who built the cathedrals, called "free" masons because they worked with free stones. International because they had to move from country to country to get work, unlike other guilds which were localized.

And there really have been secret societies throughout history (if not before), like Gnostics and Mithraics.

It's also true that the Vatican has ancient records they won't let just anybody take a look at, for reasons they won't tell.

Were the builders of Gothic cathedrals also a secret society?

I believe it, if only because it reminds me of the history of obstetrical forceps for difficult childbirths. The Chamberlen family that invented them kept them secret for generations.

Freemasonry also really ticks off the Catholic Church.
