i guess the press in Australia is as ignorant of the English language as the writers of a typical crappy regional American paper (such as the Austin American Statesman)...

"AUSTRALIA has become a nation of spendthrifts, as people now choose to save for a rainy day instead of going on spending sprees."
finance.news.com.au

dictionary.com definition of spendthrift:
spend·thrift: One who spends money recklessly or wastefully.

of course, given the hedonism of the times, it is not exactly surprising that even newspaper writers and editors are unfamiliar with the real meaning of spendthrift.
