Houston of Clinton, Iowa, points out the parts that make up his homebrew biodiesel processor, which is capable of making two 55-gallon batches of fuel per day. Houston is offering classes about how to build a processor and make the fuel. CLINTON, Iowa — As President Bush emphasizes the need for the United States to reduce its dependence on foreign oil, T.J. Houston of Clinton already has taken the first step. Houston researched the process of making “homebrew” biodiesel and built his own processor capable of making two 55-gallon batches of the fuel per day. The main ingredient in homebrew biodiesel is vegetable oil, which can be obtained from local restaurants. The process also includes methanol, commonly used as fuel for race cars. Houston said the process is not dangerous if proper precautions are taken. “It’s not that hard,” he said. “You don’t have to be a rocket scientist.” Biodiesel can be used in some car engines and as home heating oil. Houston said he began to explore the idea as a way to get cheaper fuel. “People don’t realize that fuel prices are going to go up to $3, $4, $5 a gallon and it’s going to stay there,” Houston said. “The government tells people this clearly, they’re just not listening.” In order to get more people interested in the practice, Houston has founded the South Clinton Biodiesel Club, and will offer basic and advanced classes for people who want to learn how to build a processor and make homebrew diesel fuel. Houston said the parts for the processor can be bought off the shelf, and the fuel can be produced for less than $1 per gallon. Eric Foresman of North Liberty is on the board of the Iowa Renewable Energy Association, based in Iowa City. He also is one of the founders of the Yoderville Biodiesel Club, a group of about 12 homebrew biodiesel producers in the Iowa City area. The group produces about 100 gallons of biodiesel per week. Foresman said members of his group use biodiesel as fuel in their vehicles. Foresman said from April 15 to Nov. 15 of last year, he only bought one tank of regular diesel fuel. Foresman said he got into the practice because he wanted to reduce his own dependence on foreign oil. “I really think it’s a better choice,” he said. Foresman said homebrew biodiesel has become more popular as people have begun to see how damaging the country’s dependence on foreign oil is. “There’s a patriotic sense of doing the right thing about it now,” he said.
