I think Iranian youth were confronting it, but we didn't help matters there much. We would have accomplished far more to undermine the Mullahs by normalizing relations with Iran, and working as hard as possible to integrate them into the world community 10 years or more ago. It seldom helps such a cause to have the participants feel like they are allied with the enemy.

Same is true of the Cold War. It lasted as long as it did, partly because of our own actions. Friendly commerce can accomplish far more, in shorter time, than unfriendly military intervention. Its also profitable, to boot.
