I should have talked to my grandparents more about their experiences coming over. Whatever they suffered in their past or whatever indignities they suffered here, they never wavered in their love for this country. Broken english they spoke along with old country languages but american they were to the core. Country need cheap labor then and country needs cheap labor now. The legacy of the immigrants is rising in the social strada. Those mexicans who barely could speak english now have jobs in local conveniecce stores and are hanling money, working the latest cash registers and raising a family. Yes its against the law but i am not sure all the Ellis island folks were any more legal.
