Now on to India:

Intel to be partner in Hyderabad's Fab project

Hyderabad: In more good news for Hyderabad, the world's largest chip manufacturing giant Intel has reportedly decided to become a technology and financial partner in the mega semiconductor fabrication (Fab) unit here...

...NTSI's Fab facility is expected to be a part of Fab City, for which US-based Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), the world's second largest chip manufacturer, has a tie-up with SemIndia.

If all goes well, Fab City will host both the US-based rivals in chip manufacturing...

Re: Yields of AMD chips above 50 percent at Chartered

Judging by wafer area calculations, AMD's getting better then 70% yields at FAB 30.

And Intel's getting about 35%....

:-)

// but sometimes even better than those achieved within AMD's own fab! //

How can that be ?

Sooo, this implies that if yields were sometimes better than AMD at 50%, that AMD's yields are about 50% or below. That's not very competitive. No wonder AMD has problems meeting demand.

The reports authors said that yields were at 50 percent at Chartered's Fab7 but sometimes even better than those achieved within AMD's own fab!

I calculated ave AMD yield to be between 55% and 60% in Fab30 based on 6250W/W at an ave die size of about 100mm^2 and 12.5M production in Q4 05. This jives well with the claim of Chartered at 50% ave yield. I'm guessing the Chartered yield is at 90nm and for low end Semprons. It seems as though with Chartered production, there is No chance that Intel could quickly move the entire low end to cheap dual cores and hurt AMD. By the way, I think Intel's mature 90nm ave yields were a little BELOW 50%.......probably worse than Chartered. So much for the so called manufacturing juggernaut. I think this is another myth that the analysts need to educated about.
