Is that really 40 million GB? (not Gb)? Seems too high. That's enough for 10 million 4GB nanos or 40 million 1GB nanos. Isn't that the majority of the flash being used by Apple? They wouldn't need most of the other suppliers or are plannning large growth rates if they bought similar levels from other suppliers (Samsung).

All of that quantity may not be binding. I think, that would be too high if they are buying about the same quantity from other vendors also. If they are not, it is not high enough. Apple sold 14.6MM units of iPods last Q although all of them were not flash based but most of them were. My guess is that of the 220PB (approx.) of total nand output last year, 35-40% must have been consumed by flash based mp3 players worldwide. Needless to say, health of flash based mp3 players (at least in 2006 and maybe even beyond that) is extremely important for success of Sandisk until new applications that can absorb the supply are shipped in volume.

Don't forget that MP3 capacities are going up. 1GB is already laughable. I bought my daughter a 6GB player last December and it's nearly filled--she doesn't like to continually off-load her songs. She just adds adds adds. Next Christmas IMO 8GB or perhaps even higher will be the sweet spot. Apple will easily use that much flash, even without incorporating video. If they incorporate video, it will be even higher, though of course some of that will likely be even higher capacity hard drive MP3s. For the moment.
