Dan,

If everyone thought ergonomics and fluid design was important we wouldn't have so much junk being sold from certain companies.

Look at the iMac. It's really nice to have a whole computer imbedded in what is essentially just a fat monitor

Shape is nice, but not vital. I never liked combo units, whether it is a computer or VCR/TV/DVD etc. One area goes bad the entire unit is down. That is ONE of the reasons, I prefer a desktop to a laptop.

Obviously if you need to travel with your computer, that is a different issue.

Shape is important. Look at the iMac. It's really nice to have a whole computer imbedded in what is essentially just a fat monitor (shapewise, I mean), without a zillion wires running back and forth between monitor and computer and mouse, etc.. It really makes a difference if you're limited for space.

Form follows function, eigh?

The design form of the tower or desktop is a leftover from the '90s when the boxes were used as the collecting point for all the peripherals, and the consensus view was that a computer operator need only interact with the mouse, keyboard and that huge hog of a monitor. Evolving product lines adapt to evolutionary changes in the underlying technology. Product lines that are incapable of evolving, stagnate into oblivion. 'Tis but another manifestation of 'survival of the fittest' ye' kno?
