when the Reps impeached Clinton, there was a backlash.

I think the american people were smart enough to look beyond the simple actions to the motivations. That is why there was a backlash to a trumped up impeachment. On the other hand, people can see that Bush is really skirting the constitution and they can see that a censure or impeachment would be for the right motives. It's not the act of impeachment that caused the backlash, but the blatent patasanship. The same backlash may happen now if an attack on our constitution is ignored for purely political reasons.
