The American Civil War did good things at a high cost. Maybe we are seeing the same thing in Iraq.

Well, slavery wasnt done for case of Slavery but to have cheap labor. However, buying and maintaining slaves wasnt cheap just cheaper then the then available alternative. As improvements came along, such as the John Deere tractor and attachments it would have eventually eliminated the need for slavery. I am not trying to justify anything here, just stating the facts. jdn
