Passports fine... but beyond that this is as silly as the Gun Registry...

If you recall they were talking about accepting drivers Licenses, until it turned out there were hundreds stolen from a private Ontario license office. Canadian Passports are or were notorious for being the passport of choice for the Israelis, and other groups who wanted an easy to fake passport. So the Americans who are in a period of paranoia know that the stuff Canadians are using are easily faked. Al Qaeda keeps threatening, and the shock of 9-11 leaves the people in government grasping at straws. They can't simply say we cannot defend ourselves from a terrorist attack. So they are left to think up ways to protect Americans. We have long allowed terrorists to live in Canada. If they are in danger we let them live here. So the Americans are left in the same position that the English were for the Irish problems. The difference being that their enemy is more noticeable and they have a bigger border to defend against.

The needs of Canadians are not pertinent to the American side of the discussion. Secure Passports might be a step. Since they are going to be so in demand, perhaps the Government could have them redesigned and then have a sale where Canadians could get them cheap for a time..... I don't remember not having a passport BTW.
