I learned about the river in the USA catching fire during high school. In those days absolutely nothing was done to protect the environment. The excuse was always that it would cost to much and jobs would be lost. It was depressing. So I was happily surprised when some effort was put into protecting the environment over the last 30 years. However, there are still NUMEROUS challenges ahead. Landfill and waste management are just the tip of the iceberg as it were. No way could I say "things are getting better everywhere I look". If Bjorn Lomborg says that, he seeds to see a doctor and get his eyesight tested ASAP. Looks like he needs a few extra courses in science too from what I have read about him.
