>>Well to me, "office pc" marketshare is a mindless statistic.

That attitude is precisely why Apple went from dominating the industry with the single-largest share to being a bit player. A million times more wealth has been created with spreadsheets than will ever be created with iLife...<<

If you take only that one sentence out of context, you lose the meaning of what Lizzie said. Her point wasn't that office PC sales are unimportant. She was saying that unit sales statistics don't tell the whole story, because they don't take into account average seling price, mindshare, etc.

Is that about right, Lizzie?

That's absolutely true... in a day gone by. Back then Apple didn't "get" the enterprise model that Microsoft used to win over the business world. MS won. So now what?

A million times more wealth has been created with spreadsheets than will ever be created with iLife.

Again, that is a true statement... for the past. Today, proprietary worksheets, such as Excel are not likely to continue creating wealth. In fact, open source applications are now challenging Excel. You may not think open source is much competition for Microsoft, but I see no reason for China, India, or any of the 3rd world countries to use MS Office unless it becomes cheap as dirt to them or they work for MS and need to understand the code. And in those countries is where the big sales are - not in the US.

These days the "office pc" count really is a mindless statistic.

Ok true I will grant you that.

How much more wealth has been created with excel vs. podcasts or google video. That is the question you should be asking. Ilife is irrelevant.

BTW I just subscribed to the free 60 minutes podcasts on itunes.

Didn't JVC dominate the VCR market after Sony blew it? I'm sure they still dominate or close to it in the lucrative VCR/DVD field. Who cares? Ford dominated in the auto market until GMC took the lions share away. I'm sure the roosters were crowing "FORD" until that happened.

I think the computer market will be roughly the same. Apple blew it on the business side of the market. But after some time it won't really matter anymore. The real money will be elsewhere.
