I don't want to go too far but here are a few thoughts.

I believe that we are entering a different phase sociologically. Women AND men are still clinging to roles and stereotypes that don't match the needs of our new societal structures.

Children are still conditioned by their parents and peer groups to embrace these old fashioned roles. However, as these roles often do not match up well anymore with reality in our newly developed civilization, frustrations and disappointments are just about inevitable.

Here is a simple example. A man internally aspires to be the family provider (the traditional male role) despite the fact that he may earn less than his wife. This undermines his self esteem as he cannot fulfill his "destiny". Similarly, his wife was conditioned to look for the strong protector and now is confronted with a "wimp" who failed to even exceed her "modest" expectations. She experiences a similar sense of failure.

I believe we are at the point in our human evolution where these old gender models don’t serve any purpose anymore from sociological, psychological as well as a technological standpoint. From now on and forever, there is no need anymore for a male and soon a female for humans to reproduce. A pretty good reason for a gender identity crisis!

I don't know what the future holds but one thing is clear: the old models are dead and new ones have to evolve within a much more complex and quickly evolving sociological structure and civilization. Are genders useful or even appropriate if children are created in labs for best performance and life expectancy is many hundreds of years?
