A neighbor of 20 years did exactly that during the past boom. He got a loan worth way more than the real value, had a nice pension so he just packed up and left the state.

My understanding is if the foreclosure lawyer can't find you the court won't award a deficiency judgment, and even if they do you can always just rent in your new location. I have a friend who does attorney ad litum work for a foreclosure lawyer and he says they don't try very hard to find you cause it just creates extra paperwork.

"Anyone see a downside?"

I see no downside other than it would make a dishonest reprobate out of you. (If you already are one, then this presents no problem.)

And.... since you have publicly stated that your objective, from the onset, is to commit fraud, you could go to prison.

And.... since we all know where the money will be hidden, I doubt it will still be there after you get sprung from the pen.

Still, I think it's a brilliant plan and you ought to go for it. For future reference would you mind PMing me with your home address and size of your back yard?

ggg

LOL, reminds me of a quote from office space:

Peter Gibbons: [discussing the possibility of going to prison] The most they would do is put us for a few months into a white-collar, minimum-security resort! You know, they have conjugal visits there?
Samir: They do?
Michael Bolton: Shit. I'm a free man and I haven't had a conjugal visit in six months.

Lawyer: You know, minimum security prison is no picnic. I had a client in there once. He said the trick is kick someone's ass the first day, or become somebody's bitch. Then everything will be all right.

The financial system is also begging seniors today to do just that.. Reverse mortgages and credit cards for seniors. Live it up while you can, use your home ATM and run up those credit cards to the max..
