The first time I met Aussies was in Saudi some 13 years ago. After following some of the characters over the years I discovered they are quick to size a situation to their advantage and are very slick into gain advantage.

The Aussie guy was caught overcharging Siemens in Saudi for people who was working in the country. He was discovered and he charged for people he said were working in Mecca and Medina. Only Muslins can go there. He invoice consistently for Filipino nationals who are all catholic. My colleague discovered he had been doing this for a long time under the other boss. When he took over he got him the first month he invoiced.
Actually they have not shafted me and many are friends of mine and that's why I know how they behave.

I have this guy who was in trouble with an air-conditioning situation. The customer wanted the company to pay a lot for upgrading.

He was in charge and didn't know what to do.

I said: calculate the whole thing put in front of them and say: "Show me why you need more cooling capacity."

How can I do that?

I said I will give you the book you work the formulas and calculate. Give to someone else to check if it is OK and present.

he did did presented and saved a lot of money for Siemens.

Our boss liked and from that time on he became a man of his confidence. Boss needed some people and he went to Australia got a lot of them as contractors.

he was fired for overcharging and low performance after bosses changed moved.

I encountered him again in Switzerland raking the cash during the tech bubble making USD150K a year. He got to know how to hire contractors and was in the contracting business.

Later moved to Nortel and today has an outfit and once in a while ask me for advice. (As you know here in SI I like to give advice free of charge.

Since he's now working in Russia either he will be rich or be in jail one of these days.
From the high profile case, and this guy as my example plus other Aussies I met in Thailand I discovered be careful with Aussies!!
