Remember saccharin, and its cancer-causing potential?

I do. I vividly remember the ubiquitous cartoon showing the rat pumped up with the alternative, cyclamate, like a balloon when it was hysterically banned, never to return despite a couple of tentative attempts.

I've been reading lately how palm and the other saturated plant fats are being rehabilitated as alternatives for the currently discredited trans fats. A couple of decades ago they were considered sure poisons.

I agree that moderation is probably the safest approach. I avoid certain things but I don't eliminate anything entirely.

The problem is that the issue is terribly complex, and facile opinions, like mine and that of everyone else who who posts here without the benefit of a PhD in biochemistry, are basically time-fillers

The really solidly established facts can be known by a far greater number of people than just those with relevant PhDs. PhDs, esp. ones actively participating in relevant fields might know a lot more about currently unsettled issues, but they change back and forth all the time. Sometimes even issues previously considered settled turn around.
