Yes Israel has a fairly effective lobby. Some other countries do as well, and so do special interests within the US.

One might assume that the bond between the two countries is based on shared strategic interests or compelling moral imperatives. As we show below, however, neither of those explanations can account for the remarkable level of material and diplomatic support that the United States provides to Israel.

Many people would consider them to have not shown any such thing. "Compelling moral imperative" in particular is the type of thing that people are prone to disagree about.

Better equipped? Maybe, certainly in some ways. Better led? Certainly. Larger then the combination of the armies of all the Arab invaders? I doubt it.
