Is the implication that more saving means buying less foreign goods? The problem there is that US politicians will never preach restraint and lower economic activity - we are the consumer society, cheered on to shop despite terrorist plots to stop us. And the current generation grew up going to the mall. I doubt they will stop unless they can't afford what's there any longer.

I don't know what the magic answer to the deficits is. But it's not hard to see the eventual consequences (harder or softer, sooner or later). I have had 3/4 of my portfolio in international stocks the last few years and don't plan to change that. That's my bet.
