Well, that may be a little dismissive of many Americans, but one fears, if you have your way, we will indeed never be again at all.

That is something I never believed. It is a form of true-believerism (as I like to put it), which I was taught to reject. You truly need to realize that your current outlook also is a form of true-believerism (though basically opposite in nature of your former childhood fantasy) and upon doing so, yes, shed a few tears again.
