If they were called "the moral equivalent of our founding fathers" that would, imo, disparage our founding fathers, even if we both agreed what the Iraq insurgents.guerillas.terrorists stood for. I mean there is such a thing as propaganda; it just doesn't appear that "insurgents" rings that bell for most of us. What you are saying discounts the power of propaganda completely, and I think that's a little extreme.
