The distinctions you note would be useful in imparting a more accurate depiction of what is taking place. I wonder, however, if they can be used with any degree of accuracy given the difficulties in determining who is doing what to whom.

I am not sure there is a good answer.

That's been my more serious problem with the insurgents/terrorists/freedom fighters debate. We are moving from insurgency to ethnic conflict/cleansing. I lose track of the proper terms then.
