I am not so sure that italians and irish immigrants didnt have those among them who came here for work and then fell in love. I know former immigrants throughout our history sent money home to their families. I had relatives who i am not sure now were strictly legal. But lets assume its true--that argues for guest workers with no option for citizenship as long as there are jobs that americans wont do. Take it a step further--give preferential treatment to americans and make minimum wage jobs tax and Fica free for citizens only. Maybe that will reduce the numbers some. But for folks who have been hear for 5, 10, 15 years we need to find a way to normalize their situation, if only because their kids who are born here are automatically citizens upon Birth. Most countries dont do that and maybe thats something else that should be changed going forward.
