I did it for effect. And to highlight the use of insurgent as a word to describe the killers. I believed that the reader would grasp the point of my thought. It seems only one, or maybe two people did. How discouraging.

Freedom fighters, insurgents and terrorists are essentially the same in Iraq. But, as you pointed out terrorist is a stronger word and a more blunt characterization of these people. WAPO chose not to use it. Maybe I should cancel my subscription.
