"But maybe in the CSA the end of slavery and later the civil rights movement might all have been moved back decades. It could be like the 50s or 60s today."

Probably. Considering the cycles, would it have been all that different? The changes were more prominent in the 1970's, have we regressed from then? Well, yes, we have. The reasons are manifold. A lot of those reasons has to do with the black community. Bill Cosby, who I like, can expound on this.

"but conquering the north would likely have been out of their reach."

That was never the goal. Taking Washington DC might have been within their reach. But the biggest goal was self-determination. Rightly or wrongly, they lost. For blacks and poor white Southerners, that might have been the wrong result. For much of the US, that likely was the best outcome.

Abraham Lincoln is captured as he tries to escape to Canada

What does the CSA supposedly conquer the North? That was never really in the cards. It wasn't even their aim. They might possibly have defeated the north despite all their disadvantages in men, money, production capacity, and transportation infrastructure, but conquering the north would likely have been out of their reach.

Its just a what if. The film was done by Brits. There is a great deal of fear among Europeans that we are going in a very different, very negative direction.......even more so then what some Americans fear. I think its in part because they are more distant, and because there are parts of American culture they just don't get.

The other nite was country nite on American Idol. Simon Cowell, one of the judges who also happens to be a Brit, just could not take it. He found every song offensive. Then I remembered when I was in school, my frat. brothers and I stayed at an SAE house in North Carolina.......I think it was in Raleigh.....I don't remember. At some point during the weekend, the NC SAEs talked us into going to a country concert of sorts. I remember feeling very uncomfortable and wanting to leave. Since then, I am more comfortable with Country and there is some Country I like........the Tim McGraw/Faith Hill kind of Country....but I remember the very alien feeling that Country invoked in me at that time. I think that's what a lot of Europeans are feeling about America in general these days. Hence, this movie of the South winning the Civil War. It is felt that Southern mores and principles are what motivate Bush, and in turn, the country these days.
