I'd say lemmings for life: <I would hope that the average American would see how the system is stacked against them and they're living ever more risky, poorer lives because of it. Will they bemoan their fate or change the system?

Are Americans lemmings for life?

The average intelligence for Americans is only about IQ100, so they have trouble understanding complex things. Even a simple thing like the economics of a gas pipeline, thermal power station and nuclear power station, compared with a couple of thermal power stations is beyond their understanding.

They think they are against what's happening but they go on voting for more of the same because they don't understand that that's what they are doing. Republican/Democrat - both the same, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dummer.

What's hilarious is that you whine about it, then support more of it.

But you have it not quite right in the details: <the executive branch spied on anyone it wished,>

If you are thinking of the listening in to conversations with overseas people, that's different from spying on anyone it wished. They only spied on conversations involving foreigners [or calls from overseas, which would have included lots of American to American calls of course].
