Stop calling names. It is unChristian. As for Abramoff....what he said in his plea bargain (what an ugly, sad thing that was) needs to be read with a grain of salt. Unlike you, old Pro, I have been a prosecuting attorney. Believe me, when the Government gave Ambramoff ninety days before putting him in the can, they did it with the full expectation that more cooperation was forthcoming. It may even be that Abramoff has no direct knowledge of Delay's involvement....since Tom appeared to work through his staff. So Abramoff could make such a statement. But, and this is the key....follow the crumb trail now. Delay has two staff members who have copped pleas. they did not pledge their innocence or demand a jury trial or scramble back to Delay for political cover. No, they copped. And the reason people like this cop is that they are caught dead to rights. The government got the goods on them. So they did what any redblooded crook does when caught.....they tried to sell someone higher up. Who is higher? Whay their boss. Maybe Tom and Abramoff never talked directly, but there were gobetweens. Maybe these staff guys. The articles would seem to lead this way. If the staff guys testify that Tom knew of the schemes and even instructed them....(and there are two (2) staffers locked down by the government, so no "he said, she said problems" - very important) then Tom is in deep trouble. Now, why make his retirement annoucement now? He says it was decided long ago, but the news about his deputy chief of staff was only a few days ago....gulp. Suddenly the world changed. Tom and his attorney may even have gotten the call over the weekend advising that he is now a target of the investigation. We don't know. But somehow Tom went from the street fighter to the reclusive martyr real fast. Why? So, here is my theory. The two staffers were the go-betweens and they have plenty of info to sink their former boss. They have both copped and are singing like canaries right now. The Government now has what it needs to tie Tom in with Ambramoff....maybe not directly, but indirectly. It fits. It works. The timing is right. The players are right. I give Tom four weeks to indictment. Bookmark this post, Pro. Maybe you will be able to laugh at me in a few months. But I bet I am right. Its how we used to do it with the little crooks.
