Actually I was trying to be funny.

I have several friends/clients who have very nice houses in CA and don't make nearly that much but they bought them several years back. I was actually quite amazed at how much one set of friends in Northern CA was able to save for a down payment (more than the total amount I paid for my house) even though they made less than 50k and paid $2500/month in rent. They didn't eat out for ten years except for the cheapy Chinese place around the corner and all their vacations involved a tent or staying with relatives.
