OT: I admire your optimism and wish I could share it. With a wife working in the personnel department of a large company constantly telling me things people do wrong (no names of course) that no one else in the company knows about, it is hard for me to believe people are all that good. Last week for example, a well respected and likeable guy missed a day of work without calling in. He came back the next day and apologized about car problems. Everyone bought it but no show/no call is grounds for immediate termination. Personnel wanted to give him a chance to defend himself so my wife interviewed him. Turns out he was in jail for assaulting a police officer. They let him keep his job because he pretty much couldn't call in. That was fairly minor compared to some other no show/no call explanations.

FMLA is another area where people are always trying to cheat the system. My wife has seen it all, and can spot scammers from a mile away, but their coworkers usually have no clue as to what they are trying to do. They often get away with it but one legal mistake, however minor, and they are terminated on the spot for cause.

There is also considerable embezzlement and fraud on a fairly monor level in the company. The employees quietly resign or are fired and no one ever hears about it. This company is not unusual in these respects. Almost all these people are highly likeable, with lots of friends who know nothing about what is going on.

If you want to know what people are really like under the covers, talk to someone from personnel who will tell you the truth (without names of course as that is cause for termination of the personnel person themself).

Amy, what percent of waitresses do you think fairly report the tips they receive to the government? It sounds like you think the vast majority of them report them fairly. Do you really?

Most of the people I know don't pay taxes on income not reported to the government.
