OT: "Saddam was major league bad news, having started two wars, both of which put oil through the roof."

If you look at the chart, you can see that the Iran/Iraq war had little effect on the price of oil. The 1991 invasion caused a huge spike that soon returned to normal. The Bush ME foreign policy is an ongoing anxiety for the oil markets that shows no sign of calming down. But then, they ARE oil men! It's no mistake that Exxon earned more money than any company on the Fortune 500 last year.

Chancels re Iraq/Iran war

< think that it is clear that if we hadn't supported Saddam after he invaded Iran circa 1979-1980, that the Iranian counterattack would have succeeded in overrunning Iraq, leaving the whole region under Iranian control.>

Iran would never have made the culturally disastrous error of attempting to occupy an Arab country. We made one of our habitual bad bets on Saddam in the "get even" game.
