Bush did not serve his country, he got into a champagne unit of the guard to avoid the draft, then went AWOL, refused his mandatory drug test and skipped out a year early to go to Harvard Business School. There, his professor is quoted as saying that young GW had a difficult time with hard work and telling the truth. Most of GW Bush's autobiography about his Air Guard experience is total BS. The truth is at awolbush.com. technically, Bush still owes his country 4 years of KP duty in the Army as punishment for going AWOL.
