Even in actual starvation terms, the average American could go a few months without food if push really came to shove,

Starving people don't usually have the strength to put up an active and violent resistance. They are just happy to be alive...

But as in the case of Iraq, the power elite never seem to lack for food, or fancy places to live.

Starvation also generally makes beggars out of people, making them desperate to appease their dominators, lest their neighbors beat them to it.

All I can say is that you, and a number of other people who's opinions I normally respect, are making some dreadful miscalculations about the ability of totalitarian regimes to perpetuate their power.
