AmyJ, after a lengthy exposition on why most people do not cheat the system (instant loss of friends for instance), now asserts that “non-hightech South Bay catholic immigrants” (i.e. Hispanic) routinely cheat the system.

Well, AmyJ, you did say, "there are clues in people's behavior [and public statements] that are leading indicators of future troubles - these are the people to avoid or educate. I think most would intuitively sense it, whether through inconsistencies or other subtle signals. People are smarter than what you give them credit for. People are creatures of habit."

When I was in college I got a summer waitress job at a local restaurant. It was one of those crappy places where you have to pool tips. The first day I was taken aside and told that everyone reported the same amount, which was a lot lower than the real amount and I would be told what that amount was and if I felt the need to report the real amount I would make it bad for everyone else there. I quit. I figured it was just a matter of time before they all got busted. Aside from that it was a bad ju ju kind of place. Once you allow these little cracks in your integrity, where does it stop?

I have a good friend who put his mother on his payroll, she was getting older and couldn't make it on her SS check so he just hired her (and of course she has no duties). The guy runs a small company that has revs in the 2 million range and he does this. Since I was a good friend and he announced this in front of other people who are not good friends I felt compelled to take him aside and tell him he is nuts to think he can do this. He's already had disgruntled employees who have sued him for various things. All it would take is one call to the fraud division of the IRS and he's taking a vacation in West Virginia in minimum security.
