It made perfect sense to me.
Unless you are willing to accept that your principles must apply to you and yours, without exception and with the realization that they could have undesirable outcomes, that they could involve personal risk, they have no meaning. Does this mean we adhere perfectly at all times to all our values and principles? Of course not. But we try. And we form these principles with that in mind, accepting that there may be a price.

I dont believe she said she wouldn't save her children if if were possible. What I heard was that she believed the principle was one that she is unwilling to prostitute in a pre-emptive attempt to save her children. E is saying that she understands that principle sometimes requires personal sacrifice or it is meaningless. This is not moral superiority; it is personal integrity.
