Sometimes totalitarian regimes behave as you stated, and sometimes they use nationalistic jingoism because that is what their citizens want. How we interact with them helps determine how that plays out.

IMO, you place too high a value on ideological issues like freedom and democracy, and too low a value on prosperity. China is creating an excellent example of how prosperity can lead to freedom and democracy, rather than the other way around. The traditional American approach is fixated on one method, when there are other,IMO, much better options which don't alienate those we are trying to help.

Regarding the Soviets in Afghanistan, about the only really useful thing we provided was stringers. The Afghans would have won anyway, just as they will win against the USA if we stay long enough.
