I thought the point was that Bush had been condemning the leaking of classified info publicly and concurrently authorizing it behind the scenes.

The details are quite important in this imbroglio.

Bush condemned the leaking of Plame's identity, which may (or may not) have been a crime and which should not have been done even if not criminal. But Bush acted within the bounds of the law in leaking selected (and to us, unknown) aspects of an NIE. No law prevents him from doing so, and it is in the national interest that a President have such power.

No one, including Libby who could do so to save his derriere, is claiming that Bush authorized the Plame outing.

Big difference.
