I don't know much about rails to tell you the truth. This apple thread has so many geeks maybe they can comment. Google all along was a LAMP shop with a few notable exceptions like Oracle for the big DBs. (friendster tried pure lamp with mysql and we all know how that went). Then after maps Ajax became all the rage over there and pretty much every acquisition including writely have been ajax as opposed to java, lately. Rails is even newer buzz-wise than the ajax stuff. RoR is supposed to take the place of the old Lamp, or enhance it in some way. Ruby is something like perl I hear.

To me as an ex-DB hack, my opionion is that most of these front end tools are fairly replaceable.
