A President can simply say (by authorization from the constitution) that this information is no longer classified... go ahead and tell the press.

Well, I'm not sure that is the accepted process. I think they have to review it first with at least the CIA director to make sure that they're not revealing anything that could really hurt us. Tenet didn't know about this declassification, and in a classic cover-your-asses move declassified the information 10 days later.

Also, if you declassify and release it, you don't leak it, you hold a news conference. For whatever reason, they decided they didn't want their names publicly associated with the information. Why not call a news conference?

Finally, they were lying and hypocritical by on the one hand condemning leaks and on the other hand leaking themselves.
