Just went back and read a few of those links and, yep, I had read them before. I think the one with the "points" for assessing how prepared you are for survival, etc... is pretty on the money in the case of a sustained screw-up to the system -- doesn't matter what kind either -- natural disaster, global war, fossil fuel shortage -- you would need all the things he has listed. I think the problem with many people's plans is that they aren't thinking very long term. Like, they are thinking that the few cases of food they have stored in the pantry will keep them going for a long while.

bzzzt.. no way.
Look at how much food most people have in their shopping cart on their weekly grocery trip (if they aren't going even more often). The assumption always seems to be that everything will be back in order in 2 or 3 weeks.. maybe a month or two at tops. In the event of something truly serious, that's peanuts. I think maybe the whole Katrina thing has illustrated that point to those who paid it any attention.
