It's a mix of Mexicans and poor white people. 90,000 Mexicans live in the valley. I NEVER would have guessed that many lived in the valley! fedstats.gov city-data.com Population (year 2000): 181,743, Est. population in July 2004: 178,605 (-1.7% change) Males: 92,045 (50.6%), Females: 89,698 (49.4%) Races in Salt Lake City: White Non-Hispanic (70.6%) Hispanic (18.8%) Other race (8.5%) Two or more races (3.5%) American Indian (1.9%) Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (1.9%) Black (1.9%) Vietnamese (0.9%) Chinese (0.9%) Japanese (0.5%) (Total can be greater than 100% because Hispanics could be counted in other races) Ancestries: English (20.8%), German (10.8%), Irish (6.7%), Danish (4.3%), Scottish (4.3%), United States (4.3% A couple years ago when I was there the bus station was staffed by whites, so was the library, the community college was white and all the big colleges - even the high schools, so were the taxi drivers, policemen and retail workers. All the bars and pizza places seemed to be staffed by whites. All either very pro mormon or very anti mormon. The late night breakfast places as well. All the hotels - every business from what I could see really. They had some kind of international festival in that park across from the library when I was there - even most of the international folks seemed white - my eyes were blinded. My indian friend said who keeps the city so damn clean - he was certain the rich mormon kids weren't working the streets - HAHA! However when we saw the trash men come by - mostly white. Finally one night we left shaggy's and were looking for an all night place to eat and there was this mexican food place that was 24 hours just down the road and we found some mexicans - thank god kinko's was open next door and had a public bathroom! Has muched changed since 2004 when I was there?
