That said, I look at my own Hyundai Elantra that I bought for $10,500 and I got one hell of a car for that price. I paid more in actual terms for a Toyota Corolla some 20 years ago! In real inflation adjusted terms I have no idea what the cost differential is. Furthermore, the difference in quality I would say is enormous. There is nothing I can point to in particular except perhaps the warranty, dual air bags, antilock brakes, fold down seats, and audio components. The Warranty alone shows Hyundai is standing behind their cars big time. On a different subject, boneless round steak was on sale at Dominicks (safeway) for $1.59/lb yesterday. Do you have any freaking idea what a good deal that is? In 1968 when I worked at a grocery store in Danville (Scott Ladd Foods - Kmart Foods) Round Steak was .99/lb and the store was losing money on it at that price. It was a sale price so I am comparing sale price to sale price. Now, some people may not like round steak but what about ground round? I had them grind it up (at no charge) so I got ground round for $1.59/lb. I routinely pay .69/lb for chicken legs (on sale). Boneless skinless chicken breasts were $1.49/lb last week. Cripes, do you have any idea how good a deal that is? Anyway, someone paying $40,000 or whatever for an SUV gets little sympathy from me. You can get one hell of a good car for $18,000. Heck I got a fantastic car for $10,500. Yet, I understand what you are saying. I am hard pressed to believe the fluff in that govt report. It is of course why I say measuring prices is a fool's game. How much did money supply increase in the last 6 years? That is what should be measured. Mish
