I went through a similar experience on my political boards. I've had several and only once did I attempt to moderate (i.e., opting for the power of "banning."). I absolutely hated the experience and ultimately concluded the only viable way to run a political thread is to remain polite yourself and let folks show whatever they wish, whether venom or praise.
