As long as we have enduring bases in the ME, I don't see much difference between the US and imperialistic empires of the past.

Remember these original plans, some of which actually were put into place?

- 3,000 person $1billion 'embassy' in Baghdad
- 14 permanent military bases throughout the country. I think the one north of Baghdad is a small city with some 30 or 40 thousand people in it today.
- carve up Iraq's oil fields for ExxonMobil et al
- make Iraq completely open for foreign purchase
- place a military governor in each of Iraq's provinces

Sounds like imperialism to me. That the absurdly incompetent Rummy et al botched this up may be the only thing that saves Iraq for the Iraqis.
