Like Spain? Took them, oh, a month or two after Franco died. Or most of Europe when they swept out most of the monarchies. Most didn't experience any upheavals at all. True, they were special cases because there usually was some sort of democratic framework in place when they decided to give those guys and gals the boot. After the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, most of the problems that those countries wound up experiencing tended to be economic rather than political.

Admittedly, the history of invaders displacing the existing government is a rough one. Along with the fact that the governments that grow up in the wake are almost always totally opposed to what the invaders tried to impose makes it a bit of a cautionary tale...
