I think the deeper color saturation values, the spiffier graphics, (&, yes, the better looking 'news babes'), all contribute to the viewership.

You may say 'image over substance'... but I'd argue that (especially in television...) image is paramount.

And, even if the effect of 'image' is only at the margins --- quite often the margins matter. Just think of the effect mere 'image' had on the Nixon/Kennedy Debate viewership....
