As a kid we kept track of the summer between school sessions by the wild fruits. School's out, wild strawberries, then wild raspberries, then wild blackberries, then school starts again. This was in no. Wisconsin, near White Lake, WI, about 85 miles N.W. of Green Bay. Went to school there through the 8th grade and then moved to Cincinnati.

There was an old geezer that lived out in the middle of nowhere like a real pioneer. He built his own log cabin and a wind mill for pumping water. He grew all of his own fruits and vegetables, strawberries as big as walnuts. When he came to visit the camp I lived at, he would play the piano for hours, self taught, too. Walked everywhere except coming and going seasonally with his daughter whom he lived with during the usually bitter winters. He was close to 80 years old and the WI winters were a little dangerous for an 80 yr old pioneer living alone 3 miles from anyone else.
