By '66, Johnson's advisors told him to get the heck out of Vietnam.Johnson himself realized early on there was no winning. Even winning would accomplish nothing... My boyfriend insists that while watching some history show, he heard a taped conversation between Johnson and Eisenhower wherein Johnson asked what to do. Eisenhower also said, "get out." I can't find anything to support this. He insists, so I can't say for sure it did not happen. For over five years of his presidency, Nixon invaded Laos and Cambodia in 69, a year before that fact was made public - this despite an agreement not to, bombed more, reinstated the draft lottery, reduced troops, finally he gave up.
