JFK was no pal of LBJ's. JFK chose him to appease the Dixiecrat wing of the party, and to try and win Texas, which worked. So LBJ was a necessary "evil" for JFK to win the presidency. But JFK never really trusted his VP who was after all, previously a much more powerful man than JFK and wanted to be #1 himself. There are many disturbing stories about LBJ which have come to light. He had a decent compassionate side to him, but was also a dirty political player, and Texas is famous for its dirty politics. In fact some say LBJ invented the GW Bush -Rove style smear campaign. Like GW and Cheney, LBJ also had deep ties to big oil and the Halliburton types which greatly profit from war-making. But JFK was more a peace-maker than a war-maker. Remember too, the Cold War was a huge money-making business. And hatred against communism was like a brainwashed mental disease. The mega hawks were willing to destroy the world to fight communism, and nukes were always a very real option, though ironically many of America's greatest success stories have come about because of social programs akin to communism at its best. Especially in terms of saving average people after the Great Depression and the Civil War.
