You could say it is self absorbed to tell people you won't talk to them if they are rude to or about you. But I have found that cutting people off without a word doesn't get the message across, and people feel hurt- and don't realize they have done something to deserve the cut off. So I tell people what I'm doing now. I don't say anything to them unless they talk about me in a rude way, or to me in a rude way. I prefer to be left alone, if the alternative is bad treatment, and I think it is every human being's right to reject being degraded.

That's why. I'd love to chat with your wife. Put her on sometime. She sounds like a lady who would be respectful in discussion.

If you get a chance to, read Tammy Bruce's The Death of Right and Wrong. She discusses a particular mindset or emotional affliction which I will not refer to online to avoid offending anyone who might have that condition.
